ELDORET, Uasin Gishu, August 5 –Hawkers in Uasin Gishu County have been warned against selling pesticides not approved by the Pest Control Products Board(PCPB).
According to Uasin Gishu PCPB officer Anthony Wechule, many street vendors, commonly known as Malimali, are selling unapproved pesticides, displaying them along the streets, and posing a significant risk to public health.
Speaking to the press at the court premises, Wechule emphasised that this practice must be stopped immediately, as unapproved pesticides can be hazardous to anyone using them.
A spot check by the press revealed that most hawkers in Eldoret town sell pesticides ranging from Sh50 to Sh250, yet they are substandard or have not been approved.
“Regrettably, some hawkers offer instructions on how to use pesticides, despite having no understanding of how they work,” Wechule lamented.
He further noted that this can cause confusion among consumers and stressed that only supermarkets and agrovets are licensed to sell pesticides for use in controlling various pests.
Wechule emphasised that everyone selling pesticides must be vetted to ensure they do not put lives at risk.
The authorities are taking steps to regulate the sale of pesticides and ensure that only approved products are sold to the public.
