KIBWAYI, Kisumu West, September,2025-Ululation and joy rent the air as parents and students welcomed the launch of the college Bursary Mashinani by Kisumu West Constituency Member of Parliament, Hon Rosa Buyu.

The bursary, amounting to Sh26.4 million, will benefit over 2,600 college and university students from Kisumu West attending various institutions across the country.

This initiative highlights the legislator’s commitment towards supporting education in the area.

The program goes beyond merely providing financial assistance; it aims to raise awareness and foster unity under the theme “From Education to Protection,” focusing on efforts to end femicide.

The event took place on Tuesday, September 23rd, at Kibwayi Primary School in Kisia, Kisumu West.

It was attended by several dignitaries, including the Chief guest, Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga, Beatrice Elachi, (Dagoretti North MP), and Fatuma Mohammed (Migori Women Representative), as well as other education sector officials from Kisumu County.

Governor Wanga expressed her support for ending femicide in the region and called on the community to work closely with local chiefs and government officials to address this issue.

She urged students to remember their roots as they progress in their education, as their background and the challenges of poverty should motivate them to excel in school and change their circumstances.

Wanga, who also doubles up as the Acting ODM Chairperson, acknowledged Buyu’s generous allocation to students enrolling in various colleges and universities, emphasising that education is the foundation for a better future and society.

The leaders urged students to take personal responsibility while in school to become positive influences in society.

Chants of “No Silence, No More Violence” resonated throughout the gathering as leaders advocated for improved education and protection of children against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

It’s noteworthy that Kisumu County has been identified as a leading area for the triple threat of GBV (34 percent), Early pregnancy, and HIV/AIDS.

In her speech, Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi emphasised that educating a child equates to educating an entire community and praised Buyu for her initiative, which ensures that no child is left at home due to financial constraints.

She encouraged students to remain committed to their education, stating that it is the key to shaping their future and destiny.

It’s worth noting that the scholarship program, known as “Gifted and Lifted,” established by the area lawmaker, has allowed students from poor and vulnerable backgrounds to pursue higher education and improve their lives.
