6TH OCTOBER CITY, Egypt, August 6th –The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Board has charged the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) with Sh6.4million ($50,000) for multiple safety and security breaches that occurred during the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) match that pitted Kenya’s Harambee Stars against Morocco’s Atlas Lions at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, Nairobi on Sunday 10th
Alternative Venue
CAF has further issued a stern warning to Kenya that: “Continued failure to meet CAF safety and security requirements may lead to the relocation of the Host Team’s upcoming matches to an alternative venue.”
On capacity restrictions, CAF has also directed that Stars will play Chipolopolo in front of a 60% (27,000 crowd), down from the Kasarani stadium 45,000 full capacity.
It has advised the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and government to launch a public media campaign reinforcing safety protocols and entry requirements.
“Only electronic ticket holders will be allowed with thermal tickets prohibited.”
To avert crowd trouble, FKF has been advised to heighten security measures by deploying adequate law enforcement personnel within the stadium perimeter and to ensure total adherence to the road closures on match days.
Consequently, the Hussein Mohammed-led administration has released a clear and concise statement to fans on various media platforms.
“We urge fans to support Harambee Stars more responsibly this Sunday against Zambia and in all upcoming games,” FKF appealed on its official Instagram account.
Alluding to the guilt and fine charges, FKF noted that crowd trouble is dearly costing the federation which is coupled with the heavy sanctions it faces.
“Tafadhali (Please), only show up at Kasarani if you have a genuine ticket. Tusiharibu game tumestrugggle sana kuijenga (Don’t destroy the beautiful game we have struggled to build),” FKF urges.
Big Screens
Additionally, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has ordered LOC and FKF to immediately set up fanzones and big screens in various venues across Nairobi.
They will be installed at Uhuru Park, Dandora Stadium, Jacaranda Grounds, Kibera Kwa DC, Lucky Summer, among other areas.
Relatedly, the continent’s football governing body has also slapped Zambia and Morocco with fines on issues relating to the ongoing CHAN PAMOJA 2024.
The CAF Disciplinary Board charged the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) with breaching CAF’s Media Regulations during the Match Day One Press Conference.
This was ahead of their CHAN match against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Chipolopolo were found guilty and imposed with a fine amounting to $5,000 (Sh650,000) after being unable to provide their head coach Barthelemy Ngatsono at the mandatory Press Conference
Similarly, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has been charged with the inappropriate conduct of its players during Morocco’s CAF CHAN tie against Kenya.
They have been fined $5,000 (Sh650,000), of which $2,500 (325,000) is suspended on condition that no similar offence is committed during the remainder of their CHAN 2024 campaigns.
“The fines are to be paid within 60 days of notification of this decision,” CAF directs.
