Morocco’s Atlas Lions Maul Madagascar to Win Total Energies CAF CHAN PAMOJA 2024 Trophy

The winners, Morocco, will now receive USD 3.5 million (Sh453,250,000), an increase of 75% compared to the previous edition. In comparison, the total prize pool paid to participating teams in different stages has grown by 32% to USD 10.4 million (Sh1,346,800,000).

KASARANI STADIUM, Nairobi, August 30th –Morocco has defeated Madagascar 3-2 to be crowned the Total Energies CAF CHAN PAMOJA 2024 edition champions after a pulsating grand finale match played at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani today.

The win took the Atlas Lions’ winning tally to three since the inception of the home-based players continental football showpiece in 2009.

The RS Berkane talisman Oussama Lamlioui scored a brace to gift his country the much-coveted silverware.

In the 80th minute, he unleashed the match-winning long-range wonder shot which nestled into the net after lobbing over the Madagascar goalie Michel Ramandimbisoa, who was off his goal line.

Earlier in the first half, the first-time finalists Madagascar’s Felicite Manohantsoa’s opening ninth-minute goal showed their intent to win.

In the 27th minute, the two-time champions Atlas Lions roared back through their dependable forward Youssef Mehri.

The North Africa side extended their lead in the 46th minute through striker Lamlioui to make it 2-1 before the break.

In the second half, both teams showcased fluid, attacking football, and missed numerous glorious chances. 

Down but not out, the gritty Bareas restored parity in the 68th minute after Toky Niainia coolly tapped in the ball into the net past the advancing Morocco goalie Al Harrar.

Morocco’s Lamlioui also won the Puma Golden Boot after scoring six goals ahead of Thabiso Kutumela (South Africa), Allan Okello (Uganda), and Soufiane Bayazid (Algeria), who each scored three goals.

The match was graced by FIFA President Giovanni Infantino, and his CAF counterpart Dr Patrice Motsepe, Kenya’s President Dr William Ruto, and former Premier Dr Raila Odinga, among other regional federation heads.

Road to Victory 

The North Africans began their title campaign brightly in Group A by beating Angola 2-0 in their opener. 

The Tarik Sektioui-led charges lost to host Harambee Stars with a solitary goal before edging away Zambia (3-1) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)by a similar margin.

After emerging second to Kenya in the ‘Group of Death’, they silenced hosts Tanzania ( 1-0 ) in the quarter finals.

In the semis, they brushed off stiff opposition from defending champions West Africa’s Senegal (5-3) on penalties after drawing 2-2 on regular time to book a berth in the finals against the Bareas.

Madagascar, COSAFA’s first island country, reached the finals by scrapping through Group B, which consisted of Tanzania, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic (CAR).

In their opener, they drew (0-0) against Mauritania, fell (2-1) to Tanzania, and humbled the Central African Republic (2-0).

The Romuald Rakotondrabe-coached side surprised Burkina Faso (2-1) and stunned Kenya (4-3) on penalties after tying 1-1 in the quarter finals. 

The Bareas inflicted a 1-0 win against promising Sudan in the semis to face Morocco in the finals.

Prize money 

The continental football body increased the total prize money pool to Sh1,346,800,000, and unveiled a brand new trophy.

Morocco smiles all the way to Rabat with the winner’s cash prize of Sh 453,250,000 million.

Meanwhile, defending champions Senegal beat Sudan to bag the bronze medal in the third-place playoff which was played at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala on Friday, 29 August 2025.

This year’s CAF CHAN PAMOJA edition was co-hosted by the East African countries of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

They were all eliminated in the quarter stage after a sterling performance in their respective groups of  A, B and C.

The month-long continental showpiece also featured football titans such as Nigeria, South Africa, Algeria, and Zambia, among others.

The all-time CAF CHAN competition winners since its inception are DRC (2009,2016), Tunisia (2011 ), Libya (2014), Senegal (2022), and Morocco ( 2018,2020, and 2025).
