Vigilance House, July 12, 2026 -The National Police Service has confirmed that one person died and several others were injured following a violent altercation between two rival groups in Kisumu City on Sunday, July 12, 2026.
According to preliminary investigations, nine motorcycles were torched and a police vehicle damaged during an attempt to disrupt a church service and fundraiser at St. Stephen’s ACK Cathedral. The event, held in aid of the Kenya Anglican Men’s Association (KAMA), was graced by Siaya Governor James Orengo and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
Police said eight suspects have been arrested following a swift intervention and are in custody awaiting arraignment. A heightened search is ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals involved.
In a statement issued Sunday evening, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja condemned the acts of political intolerance, violence and hooliganism.
“Such incidents undermine public order, threaten national cohesion and violate citizens’ constitutional rights to peacefully associate, assemble and participate in political activities,” Kanja said in a statement signed on his behalf by Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga.
The disruption forced opposition leaders and other guests to exit the church compound through a side gate.

In a separate incident in Nyahururu Town, a group of individuals attempted to disrupt a political rally by throwing stones. Several members of the public sustained minor injuries, including one Joseph Gitau, who suffered a chest injury. He was treated and discharged.
Police dismissed reports of a shooting incident during the fracas.
“Six suspects have been arrested and placed in custody pending arraignment. We reiterate that no person-regardless of social status, political affiliation or public office-is above the law,” the statement read.
IG Kanja added that anyone found engaging in violence, sponsoring criminal gangs, inciting supporters or disrupting lawful gatherings will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
Governor Orengo denounced what he termed a “cowardly church attack by goons.”
“I am used to this type of war,” he said repeatedly during a late presser.
The National Police Service has urged members of the public with information that could assist investigations to report to the nearest police station.
“We remain committed to conducting a thorough, impartial and evidence-led investigation to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice,” NPS assured.
