Psychological Issues and Cyberspace: The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Addressing Gender-Based Violence and Femicide

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 28, –Gender-based violence (GBV), including the growing incidence of femicide, is no longer confined to physical spaces. In today’s hyperconnected digital environment, cyberspace acts as a new frontier where threats materialise through harassment, stalking, doxxing, and AI-driven manipulation.

This article examines the psychological toll of cyber GBV, the dual nature of artificial intelligence (AI) as both an enabler of harm and a tool for prevention, and the urgent need for ethical and equitable AI systems.

Through a multi-disciplinary lens—integrating psychology, gender studies, and digital ethics—we explore real-world case studies, data-driven insights, and future-focused solutions.

As mental health crises escalate, we must confront how technological innovation intersects with systemic gender violence and the minds it breaks or heals.

1. Introduction: The Cyberspace Crisis in Mental Health

The digital age has brought unparalleled convenience and connection, but also unprecedented avenues for psychological harm. For women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and gender minorities, cyberspace can become a war zone.

From AI-generated deepfakes to anonymous cyberstalking, the internet is not just a mirror of real-world gender inequality—it’s an amplifier.

Psychological distress from online gender-based violence has emerged as a silent epidemic. Victims experience anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and trauma comparable to in-person abuse.

Yet, these harms remain largely invisible in policy discussions and tech design.

The rise of AI compounds these risks. As chatbots, facial recognition, and predictive policing tools proliferate, so do ethical concerns.

Is AI reinforcing sexist norms? Can it be redesigned to support survivors instead?

 2. Understanding Gender-Based Violence in the Digital Era

GBV in 2025 is algorithmic, ambient, and often anonymous. It thrives in your inbox, in your feed, and inside the AI that “learns” from biased data.

What is GBV?
According to UN Women, GBV refers to “harmful acts directed at individuals based on their gender.”

This includes domestic abuse, rape, stalking, and psychological manipulation. In the cyber realm, it manifests as:

  • Cyberstalking
  • Revenge porn
  • Online harassment
  • Doxxing (publishing private info)
  • AI-generated deepfakes

Femicide—the killing of women because they are women—has roots in a broader cultural acceptance of gendered dehumanisation.

While cyberspace doesn’t kill directly, it seeds environments of radicalisation and devaluation, often preceding physical violence.

3. Psychological Impact of Cyber GBV

Online abuse isn’t just inconvenient—it’s psychologically devastating. The scars a tweet leaves can be deeper than those left by a fist.

Studies from the World Health Organisation (2022) and Amnesty International (2023) show that victims of cyber GBV are more likely to:

  • Develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)symptoms
  • Experience chronic anxiety and hypervigilance
  • Withdraw socially and professionally
  • Consider or attempt suicide

Case Example:
A journalist in the UK experienced AI-generated deepfakes of her likeness circulated online.

The psychological trauma resulted in panic attacks, insomnia, and job loss. Despite the severity, few legal or psychological resources were available to her.

4. How AI Enables Gender-Based Violence

What happens when your abuser has machine learning? When is your trauma automated?

AI can be used maliciously in several ways:

Deepfakes: Manipulated media used to humiliate or blackmail.
Voice Cloning: Fake emergency calls or manipulated audio.
Chatbots for Harassment: Automated Direct Messages (DMs), threats, or misinformation campaigns.
Facial Recognition: Used by stalkers or controlling partners to track movement or identify location.

AI is also used in advertising algorithms that unintentionally push harmful stereotypes or prioritise sensational content, often at the expense of victims.

 5. AI as a Tool for Good

AI can also be trained to protect, detect, and intervene. But who builds the systems—and who are they designed for?

AI offers promising tools when designed ethically:

Sentiment Analysis: Detects language of distress on social media.
Predictive Models: Used by law enforcement to flag high-risk domestic violence situations.
Natural Language Processing (NLP): Identifies abusive or coercive messaging in real-time.
Survivor Chatbots: Offer resources and step-by-step help anonymously.

However, these tools require diverse datasets and interdisciplinary oversight. Without inclusion, AI will continue to reflect the biases of its (often male, Western) creators.

6. Gendered Bias in AI Systems

AI systems trained on biased datasets often exclude or misrepresent marginalised identities.

Research by Joy Buolamwini and Timnit Gebru found that facial recognition systems had: 34% error rates for dark-skinned women
<1% for light-skinned men

Voice assistants like Alexa and Siri, defaulting to female voices, reinforce subservience. Recommendation engines amplify gendered disinformation—especially in politically charged environments.

These systemic failures contribute to psychological damage by erasing or distorting identity in digital interactions.

7. Legal, Ethical & Psychological Professional Frameworks

Regulating AI means understanding trauma. Healing digital wounds means challenging code.

To address these intersecting issues, a multi-layered approach is needed:

Mental Health Services: Trained to handle AI-related trauma.
Policy: Laws that criminalise AI-driven abuse and protect victims online.
Education: Digital literacy and trauma-informed AI ethics.
Technology: Open, transparent algorithms with diverse oversight.

Frameworks like the UNESCO AI Ethics Guidelines (2023) and the EU’s Digital Services Act (2024) are steps forward, but still lack full global implementation.

 8. Global Case Studies

Cyber GBV is borderless. But solutions—and the lack of them—are deeply local.

Brazil: Femicide reporting via AI-powered WhatsApp bots increased disclosures during COVID-19 lockdowns.

India: AI flagged threats against female politicians on Twitter, but enforcement was weak.

Nigeria: Activists used NLP to track hate speech targeting gender minorities during elections.

Sweden: Facial recognition laws were updated after transgender individuals were misgendered by airport AI.

These examples show the global variability in addressing cyber GBV—technology is not enough without accountability.

9. Psychological Healing in Digital Spaces

Recovery from digital trauma needs new rituals, new spaces, and new technologies.

Healing must extend into cyberspace:

Online Support Groups: Survivor-led, anonymous, trauma-informed.
Digital Self-Care Tools: Mindfulness apps tailored for cyber trauma.
Virtual Therapy: With specialists trained in AI-enabled abuse.
Art & Expression: Victims using digital storytelling to reclaim identity.

Mental health professionals need training in the digital dimensions of GBV. Healing is not just individual—it’s systemic.

10. Recommendations & Future Pathways

The future of AI is feminist—or it’s not safe for anyone.

1. Ethical Design:
AI must be designed with inclusion, consent, and trauma-awareness at its core.

2. Legal Reform:
Create binding international laws on AI-generated abuse.

3. Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
Psychologists, coders, feminists, and ethicists must co-develop technologies.
