KIENI, Nyeri, October 22nd –The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has strongly castigated Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga for remarks that seemed to mock and celebrate the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a video that has gone viral, Kahiga addressed a public function on Tuesday, October 21st, in his local dialect, suggesting that Raila’s death was “God’s plan for the people of Mt. Kenya.”
Kahiga, who’s also the Council of Governors (COG) Vice Chairman, stated: “All the development goodies were being directed to his region (Nyanza), and it seems they forgot about us (Agikuyu). God doesn’t sleep; He came in His way, brought this thing (death), and took him. Now everyone has gone back to the drawing board.”
ODM characterized Kahiga’s comments as reckless, divisive, and shameful, arguing that they go against the national spirit of mourning.
In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, ODM Deputy Party Leader Andullswamad Shariff Nassir asserted that Kahiga’s words were intended to sow discord among communities.
“His words not only dishonour the memory of a statesman but also undermine the spirit of unity that the nation has exhibited during this difficult time,” said Nassir, who is also the Governor of Mombasa County.
He reminded Governor Kahiga that the late Raila Odinga upheld the values of national unity, inclusivity, and reconciliation for the benefit of all Kenyans.
Despite the derogatory remarks, Nassir reaffirmed the party’s commitment to preserving Raila’s dignity, legacy, and memory. “We remain steadfast and undeterred in championing the values of unity and nation-building for the well-being of the state and future generations.”
The party urged all voices of reason to reject hate speech and instead foster dignity, healing, and a sense of nationhood.
