KISUMU, 7th August 2026-Two people were confirmed dead and several others injured following a tragic road accident involving a bus ferrying Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) students in Boya, along the Kisumu–Nairobi highway.
The bus was part of a funeral procession travelling from Kisumu International Airport to the rural home of the late student leader Elvis Otieno, popularly known as “The Beast”, in Awasi.
According to survivor Brian Ochieng, the driver swerved to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming saloon car before losing control and veering off the road.
Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Peter Maina confirmed the incident and said police have launched investigations. The identities of the deceased are yet to be established, and authorities are working to confirm whether they were students.
The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) received 14 casualties.
In a statement, JOOTRH said: “Twelve patients sustained injuries, mostly shallow cuts and bruises, and were promptly treated, stabilized and discharged as outpatients. Two critically injured survivors were admitted with severe fractures to the JOOTRH Prime Care Centre, where specialized teams continue to provide intensive medical care.”
Lisa Hospital near Namba Okana in Nyando Sub-County also received 15 people who are currently undergoing treatment.
In an official statement issued Friday evening, TUM Vice Chancellor Prof Laila Abubakar expressed the university community’s “deep shock and disbelief” following the accident.
She urged the public to refrain from spreading rumors, malicious information, and sharing graphic images or videos.
“Please rely only on official communication sources, and respect the dignity and privacy of those affected,” the university said.
TUM encouraged students and staff experiencing grief, shock, or emotional distress to seek support from the University Guidance and Counselling Services.
“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the bereaved families, friends and everyone affected. The University is closely following up to ensure the safety, well-being and continued support of our students,” the statement added.
Leaders have sent condolences to the bereaved families and the TUM fraternity with Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir noting that the immediate priority is to ensure all injured passengers receive necessary attention and that affected families are given support.
On his part Interior PS Dr Raymond Omollo wished those injured a speedy recovery adding that: “May the departed rest in eternal peace and may their families and loved ones find strength and comfort during this difficult time.”
