KISUMU,12th June 2026-The Association of Young Lawyers in Kenya (Okil) has mobilized resources to bring crucial government services closer to wananchi, addressing the perennial challenge of distance and financial constraints that vulnerable families face.
Speaking on Friday in Kondele, Kisumu Central sub-county, Effie Achieng, a council member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and a member of the Association, said the initiative aims to bridge the geographical gap to ensure equitable access to key government services.
“We are expecting to serve over 2000 people today with key government services like National Identification cards, SHA registration, IEBC voter registration, KRA pin registration and all other services offered by the Huduma centres,” said Achieng.
The Association has partnered with the Huduma Centre, a key government agency, to take services directly to the community.
With 80% of its membership drawn from the Nyanza region, Okil Association of Young lawyers has been moving across the area to tackle long-standing access challenges.
“We are cognizant of the fact that these services are stationed in far-flung areas, thus hindering possible access coupled with financial challenges,” noted Achieng.
Besides government services, the Association offered free legal aid and consultations, resulting in several land succession matters being resolved instantly.
Chabby Otieno, Chairperson of the Young Lawyers Association, said the Kisumu exercise is a continuation of a region-wide effort that has already benefited over 100,000 people across Nyanza.
“The beauty of this outdoor exercise is the efficiency that comes with it; documents like birth certificates are processed and issued here,” Otieno revealed.
With the country entering the electioneering period, the Association announced plans to scale up the exercise to cover more regions.
Alongside service delivery, they are conducting public awareness campaigns to induct the masses on the essence of voter registration and participation in their civic duty.
“Besides this partnership with Huduma Centre, we are also conducting public awareness to induct our people on the need to register as voters and participate in their civic duty of voting,” said the Association chair.
The initiative also seeks to address policy challenges that subject residents from frontier counties to tough scrutiny, reinforcing the lawyers’ commitment to equitable access and democratic participation ahead of the upcoming elections.
