From Azimio to Ukombozi Alliance: Opposition Rebrands to Unseat Ruto in 2027 Polls
NAIROBI, 21 Sept 2026 – As the clock ticks fast towards the 2027 general elections, political realignments have intensified after Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka led Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition leaders in officially rebranding to the Ukombozi Alliance.
The announcement followed a high-level Joint National Executive Council and Council of Eminent Persons meeting of the former Azimio coalition. The leaders said the new outfit is a purposeful vehicle to “save Kenyans from the yoke of President William Ruto’s misrule and deny him a second term in office.”
Addressing the press in Nairobi, Kalonzo said the new name reflects the coalition’s broader mission of liberating the country.
“It is in line with Wiper’s ‘Komboa Kenya’ and ‘Ni Ukombozi Time’ clarion calls,” he said, emphasizing opposition unity as they seek to make President Ruto a one-term Head of State.
Reaffirming their joint commitment to unseat Ruto, Kalonzo said no individual, party or personal ambition is greater than the collective aspiration of Kenyans.
Lauding the rebrand, Siaya Governor James Orengo, a key figure in the Linda Mwananchi movement, urged leaders to remain steadfast.
“The time is now,” Orengo said.
Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition Party was officially formed on 12th March 2022 and was initially registered with 26 political parties.
The coalition fronted former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as its presidential candidate and Martha Karua as his running mate, narrowly losing to the William Ruto-Rigathi Gachagua ticket in the race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
According to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, Azimio’s main constituent parties included ODM, Jubilee, Wiper, KANU, NARC-Kenya, NARC and Chama Cha Uzalendo, alongside Muungano Party, Kenya Union Party, DAP-K and Movement for Democracy and Growth, among others.
Kalonzo was accompanied by a cross-section of leaders including Jubilee Vice-Chairman David Murathe, Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, Nyali MP Mohamed Ali, Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, former South Mugirango MP Omingo Magara, Ole Kenta Moitalel, Lenny Kivuti and George Wainaina, among others.
With eyes fixed on State House, the leaders said they are focused on building and expanding the Ukombozi Alliance.
“It will be a broad opposition coalition bringing together political parties, leaders and Kenyans seeking political and constitutional change,” they stated.
