Kaganda Village-Nyando -Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o has called on national and county government officials to earnestly safeguard rural electrification projects.
With reliable power access, he emphasised that this is key to unlocking various job opportunities and thus leads to economic growth in underserved areas.
He made the remarks during the launch of the Kaganda Village Electrification Project in Nyando, where he was accompanied by Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Hon. Opiyo Wandayi, alongside national and county leaders.
The project, implemented by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) under the Ministry of Energy.
“It will connect 143 homesteads in Nyando to the national grid, and will hugely transform the livelihoods of the area residents.”
The County boss praised CS Wandayi for prioritising the initiative, stating, “Access to power connection is what makes a real difference in rural development.”
Nyong’o highlighted the project’s impact, noting that residents should no longer have to travel long distances, such as to Ahero, just to charge their mobile phones.
“We want to bring electricity to the household level so that people from the villages do not need to go to Ahero to charge their phones,” he said.
The Governor urged local administrators, particularly Ward and Sub-County officials, to actively protect electrification infrastructure to ensure lasting benefits for communities.
CS Wandayi echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of safeguarding public investments.
“Once the government invests in critical infrastructure like electricity, every citizen must take care of it because public resources are scarce,” he said.
He also commended Governor Nyong’o’s leadership, stating: “Thank you for guiding Kisumu in the right direction and being a governor who understands the plight of your people.”
The event was attended by honourable National Assembly Members Jared Okello (Nyando), Ruth Odinga (Kisumu Women Rep), and Anthony Oluoch (Nyando)
Members of the County Assembly were led by Majority Leader Ken Ooko(Awasi), Majority Whip Seth Kanga (Market-Milimani), and REREC’s regional team, among others, were in attendance.
